Prague – where to eat, drink & shop:

Prague, like any of Europe’s best cities, offers up a fine choice of bars, restaurants and shops where you can treat yourself to the good life.

If you fancy sampling the Czech culinary traditions you’ll find that it’s very meat orientated, with hearty grub like dumplings, pork sauerkraut and soups being the old stalwarts on the menu, complimented of course with the obligatory glass of Czech beer. If you’re after food of a more ethnic persuasion you have a wealth of options – there are restaurants of every nationality you can think of scattered all around the city centre.

Generally, eating out is not expensive and many establishments have started to cater for vegetarians, so whatever your tastes may be, Prague has it pretty much covered.

You may well have guessed by now from reading our guide that Czech beer is somewhat close to the nation’s heart! In fact, brewing beer and wine is an old tradition in the country that is as revered a part of the national heritage and identity as Good King Wenceslas. You’ll be able to sample the Czech beers (said by many to be the best in the world) and the Moravian Wines all over the city in the many beer halls and bars scattered around the centre. If liquor is more your bag try some Becherovka, it’s a unique tasting herbal concoction, sometimes served with tonic and always packing a punch!

Of course in a country with such a strong tradition of boozing there are establishments where you can inebriate yourself all over town. There are also an increasing number of suave, cool bars and clubs emerging which give the city a chic aspect ideal for those of you who like a night out in style.

Malá Strana is the area surrounding the monumental Prague Castle, where you’ll find a range of unique bars and an excellent jazz scene, though clubbers would do well to make for Vinohrady. Famous throughout the continent for its clubs, you’ll find all the top nightspots for late night revellers here, along with a variety of beer gardens and fashionable bars.

Letná; for a change of pace take yourself to this trendy quarter of the city where the city’s main faces head for a civilised drink in the many cool, laid back bars.

If you fancy giving the credit card a good run for its money with a bout of retail therapy, Prague is more than up to the challenge. The upmarket department stores with all the designer gear are in the centre if you’re a big spender, whilst spots like Zivkov are scattered with quaint little second hand shops where you’ll unearth many a quirky antique and a hidden bargain, and you’ll definitely get a taste of the old Communist regime amongst the dusty items you dig out.

Alternatively you can scour the outdoor markets for the various cut-price imports on display.
