St. Nicholas church is located in the Old Town area of Prague and its stunning white façade has only been seen from the square since 1901! It‘s one of Prague’s oldest churches and holds one of the largest paintings in Europe. This painting portrays St. Nicholas in various guises.
Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer completed the stunning designs in 1735. The life of St. Nicholas and St. Benedict are illustrated through fantastic ceiling paintings. One of the most popular features that has remainedin the church over the centuries is the magnificent crystal glass chandelier, which was manufactured in the Harrachov glassworks in Northern Bohemia. It has the shape of the Russian coronation crow, weighs 1400kg and has diameter of 4.5m.
The marvelous interior of the church was inspired by the chapel of St. Louis-des-Invalides in Paris, with Peter Adam the Elder, completed the frescos that adorn the inside of the church.
The church can be visited every day except Sundays, when a Holy Mass is being held and it also plays host to many classical concerts, which are held around the massive organ in St. Nicholas Church throughout the year.
