The Powder Tower

Prague
The Powder Tower is one of Prague’s most remarkable monuments and is visited by thousands each year. If you too would like to see this monument it can be found on the edge of the city’s Old Town, next to the Municipal House.

Built in the late 13th century, it was originally constructed as one of 13 entrances into Prague. Over The centuries, this amount of entrances has been reduced to three with the Tower remaining to be the main gateway to the Royal route.

Originally called the Mountain Tower, people began to call it the Powder Tower from the time it first served as a gunpowder depot.

Each of the monument’s four sides has lovely small towers. These add to the monument immensely – it’s a site not to be missed! 65m tall, spectacular views of the city can be seen from here. The remains of the original structure can be seen on the first floor. Look out for the gold structures that lie against the main walls too.

Why not check out the small historical exhibition that takes place inside the tower. This exhibition gives a great insight into the art of building and what life was like during the 13th and 14th centuries.
